Description:
An elegant, complex Argentine red blend showcasing ripe red fruits, warm spice and toasted notes, layered with chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla from extended French oak aging. The palate is structured yet polished, with mature, silky tannins, concentrated fruit and spice, and a long, persistent finish of fruit and toasted oak. The winery gives the wine a cellaring potential of up to 10 years.
Pairing Recommendation:
Excellent with rich red meats, lamb, braised beef, slow-roasted meats, hearty stews, game and aged cheeses. For Midtown Provisions, pair with a Prime Ribeye, braised beef short ribs or rack of lamb.
Interesting Facts:
Gran Cuvée is produced from some of Algodon's oldest estate vineyards. Rather than fermenting all four grapes together, the winery microvinifies each variety separately, ages the wines for 12 months, selects the best barrels for the final blend, and then continues aging the assembled wine in French oak for another 12 months.
One of the most fascinating parts of the Algodon estate is its historic 1946 Malbec-Bonarda vineyard, where the two varieties were planted together in alternating rows. The estate also has old Syrah vines planted around 1960, whose fruit can be used in Gran Cuvée.
Production is extremely limited. The winery's 2021 Gran Cuvée was limited to just 500 bottles, making this substantially more boutique than a typical Argentine red blend.
Serve: 59–63°F. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes of air before serving, particularly for a younger vintage.
